How to Make Your Own Plantable Seed Paper at Home
Making your own seed paper is a wonderfully satisfying craft — and a brilliant way to create zero-waste cards, gift tags, or decorations. If you love the idea of plantable seed cards but want to try making your own, here's a step-by-step guide to get you started.
What You'll Need
- Scrap paper (newspaper, old envelopes, or used printer paper)
- Wildflower seeds (forget-me-nots, poppies, and cornflowers work well)
- A blender
- A shallow tray or baking dish
- A piece of fine mesh or an old picture frame with mesh stretched across it
- Sponge or cloth
- Water
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare your pulp
Tear your scrap paper into small pieces and soak in warm water for at least an hour. Blend until you have a smooth, thick pulp. Add more water if needed — it should be the consistency of porridge.
2. Add your seeds
Stir your wildflower seeds into the pulp. Use roughly 1–2 teaspoons of seeds per A5 sheet of paper. Mix well so the seeds are evenly distributed.
3. Form your sheets
Pour the pulp into your shallow tray filled with water. Slide your mesh frame under the pulp and lift it up slowly, letting the water drain through. You should have an even layer of pulp on the mesh.
4. Press and dry
Place a cloth or sponge over the pulp and press firmly to remove excess water. Carefully flip the mesh onto a flat surface and peel away. Leave to dry completely — this can take 24–48 hours depending on thickness.
5. Cut and use
Once dry, cut into card shapes, gift tags, or any shape you like. Write your message, and let the recipient know they can plant it!
Tips for Success
- Thinner sheets dry faster and are easier to write on.
- Native wildflower seeds are best for UK gardens and support local pollinators.
- Store finished seed paper in a cool, dry place until you're ready to use it.
